The Clinical Histopathology Imaging Evaluation Foundation (CHIEF) model represents a groundbreaking advancement in digital pathology, designed to tackle the challenges of generalizability in cancer diagnosis. CHIEF integrates unsupervised and weakly supervised machine learning techniques to extract diverse pathology features from histopathology images. Trained on an unprecedented 44 terabytes of data encompassing 60,530 whole-slide images from 19 anatomical sites, CHIEF excels in cancer cell detection, tumor origin identification, molecular profiling, and prognostic predictions. Its robust validation across 19,491 slides from 32 datasets worldwide demonstrated up to a 36.1% improvement over existing AI methods, effectively addressing variations in slide preparation and population diversity. This foundation model sets a new benchmark for scalable and efficient cancer diagnostics in digital pathology.
